General Information

English as a Second Language classes emphasize listening, speaking, reading, and writing instruction for non-native English speakers for whom language skills are a barrier to employment.  U.S. Citizenship classes are also available at some class locations.

Courses in the English as a Second Language program are designed to develop and improve basic reading, writing, listening, and speaking English.  Each student is assessed using the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS).

Skills taught include reading comprehension, vocabulary building, grammar, sentence structure, paragraph and essay writing; listening and speaking skills; and computer knowledge. These concepts and skills are taught through lecture, classroom exercises, small group work and individual instruction.  These courses are designed to enhance a student’s life and work skills and encourage students to obtain further education.

To enhance student learning, students and faculty will utilize a combination of the following instructional methods that address all learning styles:

v  Lecture and small/large group discussion on reading, writing, mathematics and  computer skills

v  Small group activities

v  Individualized instruction

v  Computer instruction

v  Peer coaching

v  Independent study

v  Guest speakers

v  Community tours

Grays Harbor College offers morning, afternoon and evening classes in different locations.  The total price of the class is $25 per quarter.
