The week of May 12, 2008 -- Six Weeks before Graduation
Welcome to the CHOKERS!
While we are still months away from basketball season, I want to welcome Derrick Pringle, our new coach for the Choker women’s team. Formerly the assistant coach for the women’s team at The Evergreen State College, Derrick has extensive coaching experience on the basketball court. He is a graduate of TESC. Go Chokers!
One-Act Plays on Stage
Two original one-act plays written by GHC students will be performed on the Bishop Center stage later this week. “Horse” by Dustin Leithold and “Patterns” by Shawn LeVering debut on Thursday evening with shows also scheduled Friday and Saturday. All shows are at 7:30 p.m., plus an additional performance at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets available at the Bishop Center door. Brad Duffy and Lynne Lerych direct the student efforts; poster by Bysshe Lerych.
Beware, Friday will be MAYHEM!
As if every day at this time of year doesn’t bring enough mayhem, the students have declared Friday as Project Mayhem. Hosted by ASGHC, campus will be rocking with activities, games, burgers on the grill and a great spirit of frivolity. In addition to Mayhem, the college is hosting World Class Scholars (juniors and seniors from area high schools) visiting some classes on campus and then partaking in Mayhem activities, to give them a sample of real campus life. Plus, Friday is our annual Safety, Healthy and Wellness Fair in the HUB. Stop by presenters for stress relief, blood pressure checks, healthy-ish snacks, and a host of other healthy ideas. And to top it off, the finale for our Relay for Life Team’s Silent Auction is at 12:30 p.m. Friday.
Spellman Gallery Show
The annual high school art show can be viewed in the Spellman Library gallery through midweek. There are nearly 200 entries by some very talented high school artists from our area. Next to go up in the gallery will be works by our own GHC art students.
Happy Belated TRiO Day
While it did not make our notes for last week, we don’t want to overlook the great job our TRiO folks do for so many GHC students. Not only do they work hard to help students, now they are taking our old, unwanted books off our hands. Drop surplus books off at the TRiO office on the lower level of the Library, or call them at ext. 4076 and they will even come and take them out of your car. All proceeds will go into a fund to help TRiO students pay for textbooks.

Summer Musical Auditions
Auditions for Grays Harbor College’s Summer Musical Theatre production of “Cabaret” are slated for next week. Tryouts are scheduled for next Thursday, May 22, at 7 p.m., and again at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 24. All auditions will take place at the Bishop Center.
The summer musical program is for high school and college-age students, sponsored by the Marian J. Weatherwax Endowment Fund. According to Director Brad Duffy, there are featured roles for four females and four males, plus a large chorus.
One of the classic musicals, “Cabaret” has received multiple awards, both when it first debuted on Broadway and later as revivals of this favorite were performed. The show tells the story of writer Clifford Bradshaw who travels to Berlin in 1930, just as Hitler is rising to power. Instead of writing a novel, he learns about the completely different world of “Cabaret.”
