Here are skills all the student lab assistants should be able to do. Please regularly practice these, and give me suggestions if there seem to be other things that you find you get questions about, that are not listed here!

As an "opening the door" first step each day, please scan something-- anything at all, just do it. It seems as if the scanner is pretty tempermental, and I'd rather find out early in the day if it is going to work or not, rather than wait for a user to show up and get disappointed! Obviously, if it does not work, please let me or Cara Beth know so we can fix it.

I. General stuff
A. Logging in, solving common problems with logins (can't remember the SID, just don't know how, etc.).
B. Saving files: to thawspace, to network, to removable disc, burning CD's.
C. Getting your email
D. Using usb connections such as a thumb drive.
E. Printing, common problems, changing paper and ink cartridges.
F. Getting one of our portable floppy drives and hooking it up.

II. PowerPoint
A. Open new/old file
B. Creating slides
C. Using transitions
D. Working with images from clip art, other files, etc.
E. Importing text from Word or text document.
F. Making use of fonts.

III. Scanning
A. Basic operation: turning on the scanner, activating the appropriate sofware, etc.
B. Selecting an area to be scanned
C. Selecting correct resolution for the task at hand.
D. Saving to a file-- what type of file? BMP? JPEG? GIF? other?
E. OCR functions.

IV. Photoshop Elements
A. Opening the application, opening a file, creating a new file.
B. Saving the file as a JPEG, GIF, BMP, PDF. Why? which?
C. Selecting areas; cutting, pasting, moving, deleting portions.
D. The concept of layers.
E. Refer to tutorials at PhotoShop's site. Specifically, use the ones on fixing a scanned image, and harnessing the power of layers.
F. How to enhance images: brighten, contrast, red eye correction, sharpen/soften.

V. MS Publisher
A. Open new/old file
B. Adding clip art; photos from files, etc.
C. Adjusting colors
D. Adding text
E. Basic editing: moving, resizing, erasing, changing colors/fonts, etc.
F. Printing successfully.
VI. Digital Cameras
A. Basic operation
B. Getting the images out of the camera and into the computers.

VII. Photoshop Album
A. Don't think we need to worry about this for right now; although it appears to offer the possibility of creating slide shows, so we may want to investigate recommending this as an alternative to PowerPoint for some situations.

VIII. Procedural
A. Don't do reference.
B. How to call for help; when to call for help.
C. How of assist the users. Are there limits?
D. What kinds of problems should you be alert to?
