Koi Aquaculture & Renewable Power

The goal of the KARP Project is to meaningfully advance awareness of aquaculture and energy use that is well aligned to lifestyles compatible with the Earth’s capacity to sustain us. We intend to accomplish this goal in a timely manner through the development and application of the following state of the art technologies:

Wind Power Systems
Through the use of a wind turbine, wind energy can be used to generate electricity through a generator. Grays Harbor County is an ideal location to harness the wind, as offshore winds are predominant almost year round.

Micro-Hydro Power Systems
Small-scale hydroelectric generating system can be a very cost-effective source of renewable power. Through the use of a turbine, electricity can be generated if the wheels are kept turning. Our design will use presently diverted water from existing pipes, and run it through the selected micro-hydro unit.

Solar or Photovoltaic Power Systems
Solar power is derived from the energy released by the sun. Although Grays Harbor County is not normally saturated by the sun, low levels of solar radiation can produce a surprising amount of renewable energy for both electrical use as well as heating water through solar collection.

Koi Aquaculture
Ornamental carp, better known as koi, are highly prized ornamental pond fish well known throughout the world, and are quite popular throughout the Pacific Northwest. Our koi will be raised in the new, state-of-the-art hatchery facility. Using the power of the sun, we intend to heat water needed to breed these beautiful fish.

Acknowledgements
The KARP Project would like to acknowledge the dedicated efforts of all past students, both work-study and volunteers, who have been affiliated with this project. We recognize that the foundation they created is the main reason that current members are presently finding success in our activities. KARP would also like to thank all current and past partners, who have donated their time and resources to see this project move forward. We hope they will take pride in the accomplishments that we see in the near future.
